As we kick off this BLOG thingy, I thought I would give you a little history. That way you can put me and my Blog in context.
From the time I was old enough to notice others, I was drawn to helping them. I got in trouble for counseling my older brother's ex girlfriend on the phone...I was 12...she was 16. Over almost 40 years, I've worked in fruit stands, flea markets, service stations, car washes, trucking companies, retail, food service, military service, civil service, ministry, owned businesses, founded non-profit corporations, supervised construction projects and now, the Internet. The one thing that ties all these things together is my tendency to try to help those I've found along the way.
Finally, in 1991, I faced the fact that helping people is what I'm supposed to do with my life...regardless of pay. That's made all the difference in my life, and, I hope, made a difference in the lives of others. In recent years, I've gone to Senior centers, slums, churches, clubs, other countries...even door-to-door, finding people to help. I've been privileged to help my brother and mother in their last days on earth and, through management of health and estate decisions, help the larger family. I've had the honor of being directly involved with the marriage and family issues of hundreds of people. I've helped people with mental illness get the treatment they need. I've been to doctor visits with people and done research to help them understand the treatment for cancer, Alzheimer's, osteoporosis, emphysema, asthma, diabetes and various cardio-vascular diseases. I've helped families and children recover from molestation, domestic violence and drug addiction. I've been to court with people who have committed crimes like DUI, cruelty to animals, even child molestation. It's been a great honor that people have given me the trust to be involved in the most intimate and often embarrassing parts of their lives.
It's even a greater honor because I'm not a trained doctor, lawyer or counselor. If you've seen much of our website, you probably noticed something different here. We don't approach anything from a position of superior education, intellect, or lifestyle...because we're not in any way superior to anybody. I'm just a regular guy, sharing things I'm learning as I struggle through life. The others at the site are the same. I share my wrinkles, faults, weaknesses, stupid blunders and rare successes in every issue I take up. If we don't know, we'll tell you, and then we can search together for an answer. If you want someone to come at you from moral or educational superiority, there are plenty of places you can go. If you want someone to go with you, this is the place to be.
This BLOG is committed to sharing the insights and thoughts we have while helping people with their family life problems. The next couple posts will catch you up on Way2Hope history, then we'll proceed together. Reality Internet, with nothing staged. Come on along!
